The Japan Swiss Architectural Association (JSAA) is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Methodologies, by Swiss architects E2A Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert Architekten.
E2A has recently completed major projects in Switzerland and Germany, including the taz Neubau (a publishing and editing center for the taz newspaper) in Berlin and the Apartment House Geistlich in Schlieren (near Zurich).
The exhibition presents both projects under development and recently completed projects – realized in Switzerland and Germany. All projects have arisen from competition entries. Each project is represented by a model, an image, and an execution plan investigating the core of E2A’s architecture. As Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert state:
«The contemporary condition of producing and developing architecture has become so vulnerable. It is important that we aim for strategic methodologies that deliver resilient concepts. Methodologies are used as an operative tool to evolve priorities in space.»
Methodologies - denotes an attitude towards developing projects of the architectural office founded in Zurich in 2001. E2A's methodology of work confronts idealism with an inventory of realities. This confrontation witnesses a sense of irony, pleasure, and a strategic contradiction to reassess an omnipresent burden of context and program. Desire and reality, narrative and analysis form an increasingly conflicted relationship. E2A's contributions, therefore, don't necessarily have to adhere to a single vision of cohesion but rather integrate discrepancies and disruptions with implicit organizational logic. Constraints are converted into architectural forms.
The exhibition also plays on the themes of abstraction and reality. Architecture is to be presented but as well imagined. The models are legible as an X-ray or a full-body scan. They show the conceptual essential and conceal the insignificant. Images contextualize architecture within a (pre) existing reality. The execution plan translates concepts into conventions and is the vehicle for reality. These architectural tools come into play in different phases of the design process, as well they represent different levels of construction and illustration of architecture. But as Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert state “In the end, it is a matter of synchronizing all media through conscious decisions; only then, when all operations are conducted simultaneously, a concept of reality can be articulated into built architecture.” 1)
The projects are presented on a three-dimensional 9.5m long and 2m wide grid of standard USM elements. The white models visually protrude from the exhibition's grid and conceptually form the projects' starting and fixed points. The presentation on the matrix follows an open course. Perspective overlaps arise between the projects and allow an additional narrative.

日瑞建築文化協会（JSAA）はこのたび、スイスの建築家ピート・エッカートとヴィム・エッカートの兄弟からなる建築設計事務所、Ｅ２Ａの展覧会「Methodologiesースイス建築の方法論」を開催いたします。
Ｅ２Ａは近年、ベルリンのtaz Neubau（ターゲスツァイトゥング新聞社）編集本部や、シュリーレン（チューリッヒ近郊）のガイストリッヒ集合住宅など、スイスとドイツにおいて大規模なプロジェクトを完成させています。
本展では、進行中のプロジェクトと並び、近年竣工したプロジェクトをご紹介いたします。それぞれのプロジェクトでは、Ｅ２Ａ建築の本質を探求する模型、イメージ、そして実施設計図が展示されています。これらについて、ピート・エッカートとヴィム・エッカートは次のように述べています。
『建築を生み出し、発展させる上での状況は、近年特に脆弱になりつつあります。そんな中では、持続性のあるコンセプトを導くための戦略的な方法論こそが非常に重要となってくるのです。方法論をして、空間を発展的に序列づけるための道具として使うということです。』
今回の展覧会の名称である「方法論」とは、彼らが2001年にチューリヒにおいて設立した設計事務所の、設計やデザインに向き合う姿勢そのものを意味しています。E2Aの方法とは、理想論に対して現実の集積を照らし合わせるというものです。両者を照合することにより、そこには皮肉や喜び、さらには戦略的な矛盾といった見方が浮上します。これらから、建築を取り巻く文脈やプログラムの課題を再検証するのが彼らの方法なのです。欲望と現実、そして物語と分析との間の軋轢が一層高まる現代において、彼らはそのヴィジョンをひとつに収束させるよりもむしろ、相違や破綻といった状況と潜在する有機的な論理とを統合させようとしています。これらの制約が、建築的形態へと変換されていくのです。
展覧会ではまた、抽象性と現実性という相反するテーマが掲げられています。この展覧会では、建築とは展示されるものである一方、観客によって想起されるものなのです。たとえば模型の読み取りやすさは、レントゲン写真や、あるいは全身のスキャン画像のようです。そこではコンセプトの本質が描かれる反面、細部は隠されています。対してドローイングは建築を(既存の)現実の中に文脈化しています。実施設計図はコンセプトを慣習へと翻訳し、コンセプトから現実へと運ぶ乗り物とも言えるでしょう。これらの建築ツール、デザインのプロセスの中のあちこちに顔を出し、また建設と構想の様々な段階を描き出しているとも言えます。しかし、ピート・エッカートとヴィム・エッカートは、こうしたすべてのメディアをいかに同調させ、最終的な決断に至るかが問題だと言います。その決断があるからこそ、すべての作業が同時多発的に指揮され、現実的なコンセプトが実際の建物としての生命を宿すのだと。
展示はスイスの家具メーカーであるUSMのモジュラーユニットで構成されており、9.5m×2mの立体的なグリッドを用いて構成されました。グリッドから突き出した白い模型が、それぞれのプロジェクトの展示グリッドを示しています。会場内の展示は開放された中に配置され、プロジェクト相互の関係性を視覚化しつつもそこに新たな物語を見出させるものとなっています。

E2A is an architectural practice based in Zurich, Switzerland. It was established in 2001 by brothers Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert.
Their work has expanded geographically and typologically to a broader range in Europe with public, cultural, corporate, commercial, and housing projects. Since 2001, Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert have worked on more than four hundred projects, of which forty-one have been realized. Early key projects were a series of houses around Zurich, including the Broëlberg Housing Estate in Kilchberg (2003), and the Terrace Housing in Meilen (2005). Since 2001, E2A has entered national and international competitions and studies successfully. Subsequently, several public projects have been completed, most recently the taz Neubau (the publishing house for the German newspaper taz tageszeitung) in Berlin. In 2027, the most recent successful competition project, the Auditorium and Conference Center for the University of Bremen, is expected to be completed. The Atelier Housing in Ruschlikon (near Zurich, the School Hofacker and Water Police Station (located in Zurich, will be completed in 2022.
Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert graduated from the ETH in Zurich in 1994 and 1995 respectively. Both worked from 1994 to 1997 with OMA in Rotterdam, Los Angeles, and Seoul. Piet Eckert and Wim Eckert have taught at several schools and universities in Europe including HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU), Accademia di architettura, Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in Mendrisio, and the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany.

Ｅ２Ａとは、実の兄弟であるピート・エッカートとヴィム・エッカートによって2001年に設立されたスイス、チューリヒを拠点とする建築設計事務所です。
彼らの仕事の舞台はヨーロッパ全域に及び、その内容も公共建築や文化的活動、企業との共同や商業活動、さらに住宅設計と多岐にわたります。2001年の設立以降、ピートとヴィムのエッカート兄弟が手がけた建物は400以上に及び、それらのうちの41案が実現されています。初期の主要プロジェクトとしては、キルヒベルクのブロエルベルク住宅地（2003年）やマイレンのテラスハウス（2005年）など、チューリヒ周辺の住宅作品が挙げられます。事務所では設立以降常に国内外のコンペティションやスタディで成功を収めてきました。近年では複数の公共プロジェクトが竣工しており、中でも最近の物としてはベルリンのtaz Neubau（ターゲスツァイトゥング新聞社）編集本部が挙げられます。今後では、直近のコンペ優勝作であるブレーメン大学の講堂及び会議場が2027年に竣工予定です。また、2022年にはチューリヒにおいて水上警察署とホーファッカー小中学校が完成します。
ピート・エッカートは1994年、ヴィム・エッカートは1995年にスイス連邦工科大学チューリヒ校を卒業後、1994年から97年にかけてロッテルダム、ロサンゼルス、ソウルにおいてオランダの建築設計事務所OMAと協働しました。兄弟はこれまで、ハンブルグ・ハーフェンシティ大学（HCU）、アカデミア・ディ・アーキテトゥーラ、メンドリーシオのスイス・イタリア大学（USI）、ドイツのドルトムント工科大学などの複数の学校や大学において教鞭をとっています。
